I have read the descriptions on the home pages of the Pro and Home versions and the only differences mentioned are (a) batch mode and (b) freedom to use it for commercial (paid) work.

Are there any other differences?

I think I could use the batch mode. Can I find out more about how it works without buying it first?

There are no other differences.
Batch mode is available in the trial version. You can test how it works.

Might downloading and installing the trial version interfere with the installation of my registered copy of the Home version?
If so, how can I avoid this?

The Pro version is installed in a different directory than the Home version. You can install two versions.
