As Tony is feeling a bit exposed on this...
I bought one of those plastic lens cover come white balance gizmo years back but soon stopped using it.
I've also bought grey cards and used only once or twice.
In general AWB in my camera works well for me. About the only time I use one of the other presets is when taking shots to make a spherical panorama, In this case AWB can make colour balance across the multiple images and bit problematical.
On the processing side, I've found that my preferred RAW converter, Silkypix, set on Auto WB does a slightly better job than the camera AWB now and again.
On the rare occasion that I still have an issue I correct it as best I can in Picture Window Pro.
BTW I'n NOT suggesting that the tools I'm using are better than other tools as I've insufficient experience with alternative software to make that judgement.
Finally, the importance of White Balance to me, doing what I do, maybe be far less than it is for others.
