First of all, thats an great program. The pics are very fine.
The problem: clicking the button "open in external editor opens the dialog "save under" but not the editor. The defined editor is shown by hovering over the button but not opened.

I'm prompted to save the file (even though I'd just saved it). After saving the file and overwriting what's already there, my external editor opens with the image pre-loaded.
If I don't re-save the file, the external editor does not open.

Figured it out right now in just the same way.
